Sun Love

“Keep your face to the sun and you will never see the shadows.” — Helen Keller

Sun Lover. Heliophile. Sun Bum. I want to be one most days of the week. I don’t know if it’s the Bipolar, but I crave sun. And most other people I talk to with Bipolar are the same. Like a lizard on a hot rock, we love the sun and are happier because of it.

So…related story (kind of), I was at Target yesterday in need of new shampoo. It was cloudy, cool, and I was in a quiet mood. And there, glowing on the top shelf of the shampoo isle, was a bottle of Sun Bum. The bottle looked like a tiki pole (or maybe beach hut wood) and the yellow monkey face on the front was comical. I was intrigued. I opened the bottle, took a whiff — instant transportation to the sunny beach. The scent of coconut-banana-beach-sand-something-or-other was enough to make me throw it, and the conditioner, in my cart. Impulse buy? Kind of. I did need shampoo, but not at that price point. Doesn’t matter. Because this morning, in my 1960’s 3×3 olive green tiled shower, I was transported to an outdoor shower at a five star Tahitian resort. Mental elevator going up, up, up! God bless the Sun Bum people.

They didn’t pay me for this review of their product. But I figured all of us with Bipolar, men and women alike, could greatly benefit from a shampoo/conditioner that takes us to a mental happy place. Some place that feels like it’s warm, sunny, and oh so nice. What an affordable way to get a mental pick-me-up. After all, doesn’t it feel good to be a “Sun Bum” every now and then?
